Know your character’s objective: Go underneath the dialogue. What do they want from the other characters? What is the character’s purpose in the scene and story? Understand your character’s obstacle: What’s in the way of the character getting what they want? Acting is what happens to you as you try to get your objective met, in spite of the obstacle. Show variety: Feel the levels and dynamics in the scene. Don’t play one emotion. If the character is angry or tough, when might they show some vulnerability? Wannabe? Not you! Interesting, memorable auditions will start to happen for you when you dig into scripts with these thoughts in mind before and during your auditions.
To get a casting director’s attention in the audition room, be professional, come prepared, and deliver your best performance—and then don’t take it personally if they still aren’t entirely focused. Yes, it can be disheartening to put a lot of work into a piece that isn’t being received with rapt, undivided attention. But no, the casting director does not have a vendetta against you. “Remember, these people are under a lot of pressure,” says Secret Agent Man. “They have to get the job done while fielding calls from their producers, the director, the studio, the network, and guys like me who are trying to get their clients in the room. So if the casting director is eating lunch during your audition, it means he’s hungry. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t like you. That’s why it’s a mistake to read into every little moment that occurs before, during, and after your audition. That road leads to madness. And nine out of 10 times, you’ll be totally wrong.”
Always make sure that you have the correct spelling of an agent and the agency along with the correct mailing address. To improve your chances of getting an agent as soon as possible. Mail your package to every union-franchised agency. Then, after waiting for ten days, start contacting each agency asking for a meeting. If an agent wants to meet you in person, then you are one step closer to reaching your dreams. To prepare for the interview make sure that you know how to get to the talent agents’ office. Nothing looks worse than showing up late to a meeting. Make sure you dress professionally but, don’t go too crazy because you do not want your talent agent to typecast you for specific roles. The talent agent will most likely have a copy of your package but, be sure to bring copies just in case.
IntouchTalent guides for talent firms : The talent agency industry is fragmented — the top 50 agencies make up less than 45 percent of the industry’s revenue, according to Hoover’s, a business research firm. Build a reputation for being trustworthy and let your marketing campaigns be a reflection of how you represent models and actors so you can acquire the clients and talented people you seek. If you are not familiar with the type of talent the market in your area uses and seeks, you run the risk of running an ineffective talent agency. For instance, Los Angeles will have a higher demand for actors and models than a small rural town in a Midwestern state. However, the small town might have a need for radio voice actors or models for clothing store ads.
Referrals can help. Grossman Jack Agent Jess Jones shares “As an agent and as an agency, we take talent referrals very seriously. If you are working with an actor (someone you like and trust and respect), and if they are working with an agency you also like and respect, a referral of you to their agent would probably go a long way.” Remember, this is a business and even though agents are usually friendly folk, it doesn’t mean they are your friend, so don’t act too familiar or over share when you first meet a potential agent. Think “business casual” behavior in which professionalism, timeliness, and preparedness are key. Read extra info https://www.intouchtalent.com/.
You can also check out Intouch Talent’s online directory of agents and managers, or pull a list of franchised agents from SAG-AFTRA. Although there are certainly reputable agents who are not SAG-AFTRA franchised, it’s easier to check out those who are—plus, they’re accountable to a supervising entity. Research your candidates. Determine how many agents work for the agency, where the agency is located, how long the agency has been in business, what their submission guidelines are, who else they represent, etc. Intouch Talent’s Call Sheet includes a lot of this information, and you can check out an agency’s website for additional context. And don’t forget to run your list through the Better Business Bureau to see if anyone has filed claims against the agencies—this will help protect you from scam operations or disreputable agents.

One key to getting auditions is to remember that actors should see themselves as a small business, so “think about what look you are selling,” advises acting coach and Backstage Expert Matt Newton. One of his tips for figuring this out? “Write down three shows you could see yourself on. Series regular, guest star, co-star, whatever…. Watch [these shows], learn from them, observe what kind of actors they are casting. Take notes. Look up the casting director and the actors. If you are right for that show, and are trained, and they cast your type over and over, then by all means sign up for a casting director workshop to meet them in person. If you are over 50 and play ‘extraterrestrial’ roles all the time, probably don’t sign up for a soap opera casting workshop. Again, it’s all about being smart and knowing yourself.”
