The New-York Historical Society has a new exhibit that coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Service Organizations (USO) that shows off artifacts (a World War II-era aircraft fragment, mess kit, and other relics engraved to Hope), films, and rare photographs to illustrate how Bob Hope helped lift spirits with his USO and radio shows during a dark time in American history. There’s also a companion exhibition, “The Gift of Laughter,” that delves into Hope’s varied career after World War II as a USO entertainer, television star, and Academy Award host demonstrating the many hats worn by comedians. His legacy will be brought to life with many items, including costumes from the Emmy Award-winning series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as objects related to other comedians—real and imagined—influenced by Hope.
When it comes to the favorite musical of teenagers, no one can match “Mean Girls”. The name probably rings a bell, after all, it is the remake of Tina Fey’s famous movie. Just as the movie, the play follows closely the adventures of Cady Heron after she arrives at a suburban high school from the savannahs of Kenya. “Mean Girls” on Broadway is a very popular show not only amongst teenarges but amongst parents, too! The August Wilson Theater is a rather large venue, but it fills its capacity each and every night, so have it in your mind that tickets might be scarce or, if you’re shopping at the last minute – very expensive. This problem has a couple of solutions – looking for more than one ticket provider and doing it at the right time.
Vaccination availability has been poor so far. Places have no appointments even for seniors as myself. Given this and the aforementioned reluctance of some, we may see another lost summer here with closings, etc. We had hopes things might be under control, but that seems not the case. When it comes to New York attractions, Rockefeller Center is on almost all tourist’s itineraries. This vast entertainment and shopping complex in the middle of Manhattan is home to NBC-TV and other media, but the centerpiece is the 70-story 30 Rockefeller Plaza, an Art Deco skyscraper that offers awesome views over Manhattan from the famous Top of the Rock Observation Deck. The “deck,” as it’s known, includes three floors, located on the 67th, 69th, and 70th floors. Indoor and outdoor viewing spaces offer spectacular views by day or night. These tickets come with a flexible voucher redemption policy, so you can change the date if your plans change or the weather doesn’t cooperate. Skating on the outdoor skating rink at the base of the tower is one of the most popular things to do in winter in New York City and a fun activity for families and couples. The rink is typically open from October to April. After Thanksgiving, a huge Christmas tree is erected in front of the skating rink, lighting up the complex for the holiday season. Many people visit New York in December just to see this site. Another point of interest in this area is the famous bronze sculpture of Atlas in front of the International Building. It’s a popular subject for photographers.
NYC, a city forever in flux, is impossible to “see” in one visit. You just have to resign yourself to that fact, unless you move here (and maybe not even then), you’ll only barely scratch the surface! By the time you leave, new places will have cropped up.
